Curriculum
Level 1
The Mentality:
Fall and get back up and try again if I’m not badly injured.
Experience a day when skateboarding was hard, or didn't work out as I wished, but still try again another day.
The Community:
Congratulate others when they learn something new, regardless of whether you yourself can or cannot do it.
Experience frustration and not take it out on others.
Wear a helmet to protect myself and encourage others to do so.
The Physicality:
I can pick up my board off the ground properly.
I can hold and carry my board properly.
I can balance on my skateboard.
I can push and ride at moderate speed.
I can stop before hitting someone or something.
I can tiktak.
I can turn.
Fall safely:
No sticking arms or legs out
Use your knee pads
Roll out if you can
Attempt some basic tricks:
Upside down board flip;
Body varial;
Hippie jump;
Bunny hop.
The Skateboard:
I can store my skateboard in a safe place.
I can keep my skateboard from getting damaged by water and other sources of unnecessary damage.
Describe the name and purpose of each part of the skateboard.
Level 2
The Mentality:
I can assess risk so that I challenge myself, but avoid tricks that I have not yet developed the skills to attempt safely.
The Community:
I can demonstrate proper skatepark etiquette, such as:
Taking turns;
Looking out for everyone’s safety;
Stand up for myself;
Stand up for people that need my help;
Kind words and gestures to fellow skateboarders;
Encourage fellow skateboarders;
Get out of people’s way;
Skate with awareness of oncoming traffic from all directions.
The Physicality:
I can skate down a small ramp.
I can roll up a ramp and go down fakie.
I can do a fakie revert.
I can do a throwdown.
I can ride fast.
I can tiktak around cones.
I can do a nose stall.
I can drop in on a bank.
I can turn consistently to avoid obstacles.
I can pump my legs to generate momentum.
I can attempt more difficult tricks, such as:
Manny;
Ollie;
Shuvit.
The Skateboard:
I can perform basic maintenance on my skateboard, such as:
Tightening or loosening my trucks;
Wipe down from getting dirty.
I can recognize if my skateboard is in good enough shape to ride safely.
Level 3
The Mentality:
I can use what I am learning in skateboarding and transfer that learning to learn something else challenging.
The Community:
I can help others at the skatepark improve who are just learning to skateboard.
I can welcome people to the skatepark who look nervous or shy to join.
The Physicality:
I can ride off a curb.
I can go down multiple ramps without stopping.
I can do an ollie while moving.
I can do a shuvit.
I can do a manual.
I can pump on a half pipe.
I can drop into a quarter pipe.
I can do a rock to fakie.
I can do a tail stall.
I can skate and cruise with confidence and relaxation.
I can do a kickturn on a bank, and a quarterpipe.
I can land my first line.
I can attempt more difficult tricks, such as:
Frontside 180s;
Half cabs;
Backside 180s.
The Skateboard:
I can recognize if I need new parts, and explain why.
Level 4
The Mentality:
I can use what I am learning in skateboarding to help me become a better human being who contributes to making a better, more just world.
The Community:
I contribute to make the skateboarding community to be a place where everyone belongs, especially identities who have not always felt welcome to skateboard.
The Physicality:
It's up to you. The progression never ends.
The Skateboard:
I can disassemble and reassemble my own skateboard.
